Life on Board
Aphaea takes her name from a goddess. Her temple still stands on a pine-covered hill on Aegina, looking out over the Saronic Gulf.
It makes sense to start there.
Leave Athens in the morning. By lunch you are anchored off Aegina, the island of pistachios and old neoclassical harbours. Take the tender ashore. Visit the temple in the late afternoon, when the stone turns gold.
Then let the Saronic unfold.
Poros, with its clock tower and narrow channel. Hydra, where there are no cars, only donkeys, stone mansions and a harbour full of yachts. Spetses, with horse-drawn carriages and pine-fringed bays.
If your group wants more, the Cyclades are a short sail east.
Aphaea has space for ten. Five en-suite cabins, including a full owner's suite and four queen cabins. Each bathroom is stocked with Diptyque toiletries. Every cabin has its own air conditioning.
The flybridge is a true ocean terrace. Sunbeds, a lounge and a sound system with four speakers. It is the best seat on the boat at sunset.
The forward cockpit is quieter. A place to read, nap or watch the coastline drift by.
When you stop, the hydraulic swim platform lowers to the water.
Two Seabob F5s are the stars. Then come the paddleboards, a two-person kayak, water skis, a wakeboard and a three-person towable. Snorkel sets for everyone. A Highfield tender with 70 HP for beach runs.
Chef Dionisis cooks Greek and Mediterranean dishes with fresh local fish. His smoothies have a following of their own.
Captain Michalis is a former racer and sailing coach. He is calm, warm and very good with children.
A goddess's name. A crew that lives up to it.
